L’Accademia si presenta sul web con un nuovo sito internet completamente ripensato per le attuali esigenze della comunità accademica e per le nuove modalità di utilizzo degli utenti. Oltre 170 ricercatori all'USI per la ventiduesima conferenza internazionale sui metodi di decomposizione dei domini

Si è conclusa venerdì la International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods (DD22), durante la quale sono stati discussi i più recenti sviluppi nei vari aspetti dei metodi di decomposizione dei domini grazie alla presenza di matematici, esperti di scienze computazionali e ingegneri. La conferenza - approdata all'USI grazie alle attività del direttore dell'ICS, prof. Rolf Krause - si è focalizzata sull'analisi numerica, sulle applicazioni scientifiche ed industriali, sullo sviluppo di software e sul ruolo del supercalcolo. >>>

Andare in pensione migliora la vita?

Questo provocatorio interrogativo sarà al centro della lezione pubblica 2013 del CEPRA, con l’obiettivo di promuovere la ricerca e il dibattito su temi legati all’invecchiamento, alle pensioni e alla sanità. La lezione del prof. Axel Börsch-Supan, direttore del Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy di Monaco di Baviera, si terrà in lingua inglese martedì 1 ottobre alle 17.30 nell’Aula magna del campus di Lugano. >>>

Lino Guzzella nominato Presidente del Politecnico federale di Zurigo

Cittadino svizzero e italiano, Guzzella è attualmente rettore e professore ordinario di termotronica all'ETH Zurich. Subentrerà all'attuale Presidente, prof. Ralph Eichler, a inizio gennaio 2015. Nominando Guzzella il Consiglio federale ha accolto la proposta all’unanimità del Consiglio dei Politecnici. >>>

Primi riconoscimenti per il nuovo centro di ricerca in operazioni umanitarie (HORC)

Il nuovo centro di ricerca studia il comportamento umano e i meccanismi decisionali dei professionisti durante le operazioni umanitarie, allo scopo di migliorarne le prestazioni. Il centro, nato a dicembre del 2012, vanta già i primi riconoscimenti per i propri articoli scientifici, che sono stati premiati in due conferenze internazionali. >>>

Oggi al via la settimana della lingua e della cultura italiana a Briga

«Conosciamoci»: è attorno a questo messaggio che si articolerà la settimana dedicata alla lingua e alla cultura della Svizzera italiana in corso fino al 27 settembre al Liceo Spiritus Sanctus di Briga. L’iniziativa sarà inaugurata oggi alle 13.00 dai capi del Dipartimento dell'educazione dei due Cantoni coinvolti, i Consiglieri di Stato Oskar Freysinger e Manuele Bertoli, e dal Presidente dell'USI prof. Piero Martinoli. Portando la Svizzera italiana al di là del Passo della Novena si mira a promuovere il plurilinguismo nazionale, rafforzando i legami che uniscono le diverse regioni linguistiche del nostro Paese, al di là degli stereotipi. >>>

Dopo la valutazione della giuria di esperti che ha selezionato i finalisti, tocca ora al pubblico. La start-up più votata si aggiudicherà un biglietto per l’esclusivo evento Minds100 allo Swiss Innovation Forum. Newscron è una nuova applicazione, un aggregatore di notizie, che mira ad ovviare al problema del sovraccarico informativo. È possibile votare sul sito del Swiss ICT Award 2013 entro il 14 ottobre 2013. >>>

Tutti gli studenti, i professori e i collaboratori dell’USI sono invitati a postare entro martedì 8 ottobre, attraverso le pagine ufficiali dell’USI di Facebook e Twitter, una foto che li ritragga su uno dei due Campus di Lugano e di Mendrisio. Gli autori delle quattro foto più creative riceveranno un biglietto per due persone per Lugano Food&Walk - una camminata “gourmand” di 6 km che si terrà il 13 ottobre attraverso i luoghi più suggestivi della città - del valore di 120 CHF. >>>

Sono sei le matricole ammesse al programma SPORT d'élite dell'USI

Gli studenti-atleti che hanno ottenuto lo statuto di sportivi di élite sono tre calciatori e un giocatore di hockey per la Facoltà di scienze economiche: Massimo Ronchetti dell'HC Davos, Ulisse Pelloni del FC Locarno, Davide Riva del FC Chiasso e Tito Tarchini del FC Chiasso. Sono invece iscritti alla Facoltà di scienze della comunicazione Ludovico Basso, cestista della SAM Massagno, e Micol Dardani, equitazione. Queste matricole vanno ad aggiungersi ad Antoine Rey, calciatore del FC Lugano e studente al 2° anno del Master in Management. Il programma offre a chi ottiene lo statuto di sportivo d’élite la possibilità di pianificare i propri studi in maniera flessibile, favorendo la conciliazione tra studi accademici e esigenze degli atleti. >>>

Per conoscersi meglio tra musica e parole

Oggi alle 19.30 in aula 354 riprendono le prove dell'associazione studentesca USI Coro: tutti i membri della comunità accademica sono invitati a partecipare, che abbiano o meno esperienza nell'ambito del canto o della musica. Al di là degli obiettivi musicali, infatti, il coro ha come scopo principale quello di costruire e rafforzare i contatti tra studenti, ricercatori e docenti durante il tempo libero. >>>

L'esame IELTS per la prima volta in Ticino: iscrizioni entro sabato

Grazie a un nuovo accordo tra il British Council e USI/SUPSI, per la prima volta sarà possibile sostenere l’esame IELTS (International English Language Testing System) in Ticino. La prima sessione si terrà sabato 16 novembre e si svolgerà al campus SUPSI di Manno. L’iscrizione dev’essere effettuata online accedendo al sito: https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/Default.aspx. Il termine di iscrizione è sabato 28 settembre 2013. Il Servizio relazioni internazionali dell'USI è a disposizione per chi fosse interessato agli opuscoli informativi o avesse domande.

USI welcomes more than 170 Researchers for the 22nd International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods

Last Friday, the International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods (DD22) ended. At DD22 recent developments in various aspects of domain decomposition methods were discussed, bringing together mathematicians, computational scientists and engineers. The conference that was hosted by USI thanks to the work of ICS director Prof. Rolf Krause, focused on numerical analysis, scientific and industrial applications, software development and high performance computing. >>>

This provocative question will be the focus of CEPRA’s public lecture in 2013. The Center aims at fostering research and debates on subjects linked to aging, retirement and health. Lino Guzzella appointed President of ETH Zurich

The Swiss and Italian citizen Lino Guzzella is currently ETH Rector and Professor of Thermotronics. He will be taking over from the current President, Prof. Ralph Eichler, at the beginning of January 2015. By taking this decision, the Swiss Government has endorsed the unanimous proposal made by the ETH Board. >>>

First Recognitions for the new Humanitarian Operations Research Center (HORC)

The new Research Center studies human behaviour and decision-making of practitioners during humanitarian operations, to potentially improve the performance of relief organizations. The Center, founded in December 2012, is already boasting recognitions for its scientific articles which received awards at two international conferences. >>>

Week of Italian Language and Culture launched today in Brig

"Conosciamoci" – Let's get to know each other: this will be the main message surrounding the week dedicated to the language and culture of Ticino, which will be hosted at the high school Spiritus Sanctus in Brig, until 27 September, 2013. The heads of the educational departments of the two involved cantons, the State Councillors Oskar Freysinger and Manuele Bertoli, and USI President Prof. Piero Martinoli are going to launch the initiative today at 1 pm. The objective is to foster national multilingualism by bringing Ticino beyond the Nufenen Pass, in order to reinforce the ties unifying our country's different linguistic regions, leaving behind stereotypes and clichés. >>>

Among the Finalists is Newscron, a Company supported by USI’s CP Start-up: the online voting is open

After the evaluation of an expert jury that selected the finalists, it is now the public’s turn. The start-up with the highest number of votes will be awarded a ticket to Minds100, the exclusive event at the Swiss Innovation Forum. Newscron is a new application, a news aggregator that aims at solving the problem of information overload. You can vote on the website of the Swiss ICT Award 2013 until 14 October, 2013. >>>

8 Tickets for Lugano Food&Walk up for Grabs

All USI students, professors and collaborators are asked to post, by Tuesday, 8 October, a picture of themselves on one of the two Campuses in Lugano and Mendrisio via USI’s official Facebook and Twitter pages. The authors of the four most creative pictures will be awarded a ticket for two people for Lugano Food&Walk – a “gourmet” walk of 6 kilometres along the most picturesque places of the city, that will take place on 13 October. Each of the tickets has a value of 120 CHF. >>>

Six of USI’s Freshmen eligible for the ‘SPORT elite’ Programme

Three football players and one hockey player from the Faculty of Economics have obtained elite athlete status: Massimo Ronchetti from HC Davos, Ulisse Pelloni from FC Locarno, Davide Riva from FC Chiasso and Tito Tarchini also from FC Chiasso. Ludovico Basso, basketball player from SAM Massagno, and Micol Dardani, a horsewoman, are enrolled at the Faculty of Communication Sciences instead. These freshmen join football player Antoine Rey from FC Lugano, a 2nd year Master student in Management. The programme enables 'sport elite' students to organize their studies in a more flexible way, to help them reconcile their student and athlete life. >>>

Music and Words to get to know each other

The rehearsals of USI's Choir will start again today at 7.30 pm, in room 354: all members of the academic community can participate, no matter if they have singing and music experience or not. In fact, beyond its musical objectives, the choir also aims at building up and reinforcing ties between students, researchers and lecturers during their free time. >>>

First IELTS exam in Ticino: registration until Saturday

Thanks to a new agreement between the British Council and USI/SUPSI, for the first time it will be possible to take IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exams in Ticino. The first exam session will take place on 16 November, 2013, and will be held on the SUPSI Campus in Manno. Registration is possible online: https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/Default.aspx. The deadline for registration is 28 September, 2013.
